My Very First Time
Exhibition of Video Art Works Co-produced by Factory TT

Date: May 29th to 17th July 2020
Location: ACE gallery, Tehran, Iran

Curator: Asieh Salimian
Participating artists: Anahita Aghataher, Negar Alemzadeh Gorji, Nastaran Azadi, Sima Bagherzadeh, Roja Behravesh, Hanie Kashani, Ebrahim Khabazi, and Hesam Nikfal
Artistic Director: Shahram Entekhabi

The My Very First Time exhibition showcased the inaugural video art activities of participating artists who gained their initial experience through workshops on the history of international video art and a review of significant artworks in the field, under the guidance of Shahram Entekhabi. The exhibition, held at an undisclosed location, presented selected co-productions from Factory TT's Video Art Collection.

All the exhibited videos were deeply rooted in the history of video art, a medium that has been revolutionary since its emergence in the 1960s. Factory TT aimed to encourage and enrich the discourse surrounding video art, a medium that has often been challenging to engage with in the context of contemporary Iranian art and has been largely overlooked. The primary focus of Factory TT is to support and emphasize video art as its core mission. The exhibition featured a diverse range of video performances, semi-documentaries, and experimental videos, curated by Asieh Salimian, with Shahram Entekhabi serving as the artistic advisor for the program.

The exhibition's central theme revolved around the contemporary art index, particularly within the realm of video art. The artworks aimed to reflect the plight of individuals grappling with helplessness, hopelessness, tragedies, and contradictions, while also raising awareness of the prevailing political and social landscape. The aesthetic dimension of the artworks produced for this project emphasized the pursuit of truth. Through an understanding of truth, comprehension of limitations, and a willingness to challenge imposed norms, the artworks expressed themselves with hope, vibrancy, and serenity. In essence, aesthetics and truth were intertwined, inseparable in their expression.

My Very First Time served as a platform to question the common rationality of dominant and popular culture, particularly the cultural industry's tendency to focus on superficial details and fragmented aspects, often at the expense of ideas and integrity. The exhibition emphasized the importance of content and totality over mere visual appeal. Just as music prioritizes totality and form over harmony, or a story emphasizes the set and content rather than the psychological characteristics of the characters, My Very First Time explored the deeper layers of meaning and significance beyond superficial appearances.

Through its display of beauty, the exhibition aimed to critique the object-orientation prevalent throughout the centuries, challenging societal norms and taboo values. The artworks showcased were avant-garde experiences, encapsulating comprehension, thought, feeling, and a fresh attitude. The collection of artworks showcased in the exhibition revolved around the mimesis of virtual forms, separations, connections, and contradictions. From beneath the surface, social layers, structures, and links emerged, inviting critical reflection. This mimesis acted as a critique and awakening, even if its impact was not always overtly visible or audible.

In conclusion, the My Very First Time exhibition provided a platform for emerging artists to present their debut video art works, nurtured through workshops and curated within the framework of Factory TT's Video Art Collection. The exhibition aimed to explore the revolutionary nature of video art and engage with contemporary aesthetics and socio-political concerns. Curated by Asieh Salimian, with artistic guidance from Shahram Entekhabi, the exhibition challenged conventional rationality, interrogated prevailing cultural norms, and questioned societal values through the power of visual expression.

Anahita Aghataher
Shadow 4:56, color, sound, HD, 2020
In metropolises, people are increasingly exposed to acute problems such as depression or even mental illnesses, which are products of modern life. These issues have garnered more attention in recent years in the field of psychology. However, the media exacerbates the problem with slogans such as "how to design your life," "finding the path to success," and "turning wounds and injuries into growth opportunities." Psychological articles and online consultations often lack scientific basis and can sometimes be highly detrimental.

Anahita Aghataher's video installation, titled "The Shadow," presents a critique of the media's influence and the culture industry. Through phenomena like seeing, hearing, thinking, and integrated reactions, the artwork exposes patterns that are not driven by awareness but rather influenced by ignorant behaviors and superficial desires. It serves as a critique of a society in which humans are treated as commodities, with the bourgeoisie reducing the human soul and psyche to mere objects. In this society, individuals are nothing more than the ultimate target of advertising campaigns.

Negar Alemzadeh Gorji
Split, 20:30 min, HD, 2017
In traditional societies, women experience a distinct separation between indoor and outdoor spaces, which can significantly impact their lives. The quest for balance arises from the desire to find harmony between these two realms and to navigate through them while asserting their identities. It is a journey of self-discovery and empowerment, where women challenge societal expectations and redefine their roles. This pursuit extends beyond physical spaces and encompasses emotional, psychological, and social dimensions. By seeking this balance, women aim to create a future where boundaries dissolve, allowing them to freely express themselves and contribute to society..

Nastaran Azadi
I am a Sculpture, 14:30, color, sound, HD, 2020
What defines a sculpture? And how does it differ from plastic art? These terms are often used interchangeably in the realm of fine arts, but they hold distinct meanings. While sculptures involve the removal or carving of materials, plastic art is characterized by the process of addition and creation.

In the thought-provoking video performance by "Nastaran Azadi," she stands on a wooden platform resembling a soap box, embodying a "living sculpture." This concept harkens back to the tradition of speakers standing on wooden crates, typically used for packing goods, to deliver lectures. It is a multi-layered artistic effect that expands upon the notions of plastic art, sculpture, and living sculpture, blurring the boundaries between these terms.
Taking inspiration from the works of "Nam June Paik," Nastaran Azadi assembles TV sets as if they were body parts, symbolically referencing the integration of video art into human existence through technology. This artistic expression serves as a tribute to the transformative power of video art and its impact on our perception of the world.

Sima Bagherzadeh
Storyboard, 3:36, color, sound, HD, 2020
In the video storyboard created by "Sima Bagherzadeh," the artist explores a novel concept of finding solace and inner peace. She represents women who seek to reclaim their self-worth amidst the changing dynamics of society. Depicting a world where children are seen as the offspring of the land rather than their fathers, the artwork draws inspiration from the artist's own experiences and the evolving roles of her contemporaries in contemporary society.

This artwork serves as a reflection of a world that aims to rectify the flaws and injustices women have endured in the past. It reflects the current state of affairs where postmodernism has permeated the lifestyle of the urban middle class, resulting in the rise of consumer culture. The majority of people have transitioned to an urban and postmodern mindset, influencing their perception and enjoyment of the world.

Simultaneously, the concept of society appears to be fading in the postmodern world, giving way to a new social structure shaped by the individual's random activities in their quest for personal meaning and a sense of belonging. This phenomenon prompts people to seek beauty by drawing inspiration from the past. Through a conscious or subconscious desire to reconnect with genuine and timeless beauty, individuals strive to escape the mundane modern atmosphere and revisit the innocence of the past. The underlying belief is that true beauty is authentic, innocent, and morally desirable

Roja Behravesh
Changes in Time, 10 min, color, sound, HD, 2019
T This artwork, presented in the form of music and film, transforms a childhood game into a gesture filled with hope and catharsis. The video titled "Changes in Time" takes us back to a not-so-distant past when the alleys and streets were brimming with the lively commotion, joy, and games that occupied the entire neighborhood. Children freely roamed the city streets, and parents had no worries about their leisure time. However, the advent of technology, computerized games, and the rapid expansion of social networks have caused this once cherished aspect of our evolution to be forgotten. The simple and delightful games have succumbed to virtual processes that only promote individualism, isolation, laziness, obesity, and, most significantly, the proliferation of violence among the younger generation.

Hanie Kashani
The Sufficient Framework, 5:48, color, sound, HD, 2020
In today's world, we are inundated with various forms of media and events that cater to our "need for entertainment." These often come with a flood of strange and meaningless words and texts that saturate our daily lives. These words, phrases, and sounds permeate our workspaces, futile activities, and media communications, shaping the culture of consumerism and dictating the content of our existence. As a result, we find ourselves devoting little time to genuine interpersonal conversations and introspection. Instead, we choose silence over empty speech.

In her video titled "The Sufficient Framework," Hanie Kashani draws attention to the idea that meaning does not solely reside in words, messages, or sentences, but rather in our very existence as human beings. Words themselves hold no inherent meaning; they are merely constructs we learn. The artist highlights the obstacles we face in today's world: despite the advancements in communication technology and our ability to interact with people from different cultures and languages, we often struggle to express our true feelings. Our statements often fail to fit into predetermined conversational contexts and conventional modes of expression.

Hanie Kashani seeks a safe space, free from the influence of external stimuli and authoritative communication structures that attempt to compel her to speak for the sake of achieving desired outcomes. In this space, she aims to find solace and satisfaction. The artist transports us to a realm reminiscent of pre-birth and formation, where we begin to truly listen and understand the phrase "We hear!" At first, this hearing is involuntary. However, as we become determined to use this skill with intention, we embark on the journey of learning to speak—an initial technique or art. It involves a comprehensive system of vocal and phonetic symbols through which humans can exert influence and control over others.

Ebrahim Khabazi
A fight story, 4 min, color, sound, HD, 2020
The video explores the act of shaving, which has evolved into a masculine custom that symbolizes power and dominance. It depicts an aggressive confrontation between two men, where they awkwardly and clumsily shave each other's faces simultaneously. The constant movement within the scene creates a dynamic atmosphere. As one man pulls back, the other leans over him, carefully and cautiously shaving his facial hair. The men utilize sharp and shiny razors to cut each other's hair. What was once a mundane daily task now becomes a display of power and evaluation between these two individuals.

Through "A Fight Story," artist Ebrahim Khabazi highlights the reactions of individuals in contemporary societies who have become disconnected from one another. They have lost their sense of intimacy and unity, leading to unconscious and violent responses. The video serves as a reflection of the fragmented relationships and lack of empathy present in today's communities.

Hesam Nikfal
The Coordinates, 6:10, color, sound, HD, 2020
The video titled "The Coordinates" by Hesam Nikfal presents a narrative that explores the object-orientation and control systems that dominate contemporary human existence. It serves as a critique of the detrimental effects caused by the loss of social connections and the gradual destruction of both material and spiritual capacities, consequences brought upon by human actions. The video aims to shed light on the digital age and the reliance on statistics and digits, where individuals are constantly quantified, categorized, and divided into various groups according to algorithmic formulas, resembling mere commodities.

This loss of connection is intricately linked to the decline of national language and literature, which is influenced by the influential role played by mass media worldwide. The mass media holds significant power in political, economic, social, and cultural contexts, shaping various aspects of society. In fact, the importance of social media has been acknowledged by scholars as a defining factor in differentiating historical stages of human civilization. Alvin Toffler, a renowned futurist, divides human civilization into three distinct phases: agricultural, industrial, and post-industrial, also known as the age of communication and information. According to Toffler, power in the post-industrial era lies in the hands of those who have access to extensive communication and information networks.

Hesam Nikfal
I Swear, Multi-channel HD video installation, looped with sound, 2020
Hesam Nikfal's multi-channel HD video installation, titled "I swear," boldly confronts the complex sociopolitical landscape of contemporary Iran. Drawing inspiration from Bruce Nauman's renowned video installation "Anthro / Socio" from 1991, Nikfal weaves a powerful narrative that reflects the erosion of trust within Iranian society.

In this thought-provoking work, Nikfal takes viewers on a visually and emotionally charged journey. Through the looping video sequences accompanied by resonant sound, he encapsulates the profound sense of disillusionment and mistrust that permeates the fabric of Iranian life. The artist's head turning around while emphatically repeating the phrase "I swear" becomes a symbolic gesture, expressing the desperation and frustration of a society grappling with a profound crisis of faith.

Within the context of Iran's current sociopolitical climate, the act of swearing becomes a poignant metaphor for the shattered trust between individuals and the various institutions that govern their lives. Nikfal's exploration goes beyond the realm of personal experience, delving into the broader collective psyche of a society plagued by pervasive corruption, media manipulation, and a crisis of legitimacy.

By referencing Nauman's influential video installation, Nikfal situates his work within the lineage of artists who have harnessed the power of video art to confront social and political realities. The deliberate choice to build upon Nauman's foundation is a testament to Nikfal's engagement with the broader discourse of contemporary art and his desire to contribute meaningfully to the ongoing dialogue.

Through the medium of multi-channel HD video installation, Nikfal skillfully captures the complexity and nuance of Iran's sociopolitical climate. The repetition of the phrase "I swear" magnifies the weight of the artist's message, emphasizing the pervasive sense of mistrust and disillusionment. This powerful visual and auditory experience serves as a call to action, urging viewers to critically examine the systems and institutions that shape their own societies.

"I swear" is a testament to Nikfal's artistic vision and ability to provoke profound reflection. By confronting the viewer with the unsettling reality of a society struggling with profound injustices, the artist challenges us to question our own assumptions, biases, and preconceived notions. In this multi-channel HD video installation, Nikfal's work transcends the realm of art, becoming a potent catalyst for introspection, empathy, and ultimately, the collective pursuit of a more just and trustworthy society.
